    Library Alert

Please note that the library will now close at 11:15. This is due to the congestion that happens in the coatroom when the meeting is over and people are trying to get their coats at the same time as we are trying to put away the books. If the door to the cloakroom is closed when you get there, it's because someone is putting a heavy item in the storage closet. Please be patient!!

    Memory Boxes

There is always a need for memory boxes for the Maternal Bereavement program at our local hospital. Perhaps you could paint one for us during the upcoming month. You can get a paper mache box from Lyn Chaplin. The designs are your choice, but should be non-denominational and non-seasonal. Below is a thank you letter for the memory boxes we have provided in the past. Let's keep up the good work.

    Dear Lyn and Guild Members;

Thank you for your generous support of our Maternal Bereavement program. The memory boxes are a truly works of art and are continued to be cherished by families. A representative from a local perinatal loss support group has also told us just how meaningful your beautiful boxes are for bereaved parents. They bring them to their group.
    your work is sincerly appreicated
    Lois Scott

    Festival of Trees

There are a number of members who have signed out ornaments, but have not yet returned them. Please bring them to the September Opening, whether they are finished or not. The following ornaments are still outstanding: 44 single notes, 6 double notes, 19 bells (oval) and 26 instruments (oval). As you can see, this is a large number of ornaments which are urgently needed for the tree. If you haven't completed your ornaments, please do so now and return them on September 8th. If for some reason you are unable to paint them, please bring them back anyway, so that someone else can paint them.

June 9th - our thanks to:

    Carolyn Davidson
    Audrey Harris-Gaunt
    Yvonne Williamson
    Donna Batley
    Therese Spence
    Kathy St Thomas

Remember, because of dietary concerns, PLEASE do not butter muffins, breads, etc., but bring the butter or margarine in a separate container.

    Think outside the square:

If you want to paint a particular 'thing' i.e. a rose - try to make your design something unusual. When I think of a rose, I suppose the 1st thing that comes into my head is a vase of roses, or a bouquet. But if you stop and consider a bit more - how about a rose bush up against a lovely old picket fence, or a beautiful single bloom on a lovely straw hat, or a bloom floating in a bowl of water!!

Go for a walk down a country lane - pick up twigs, leaves, nuts, berries etc., so that you can study and digest their colour, form, and texture at home in your study.

Don't throw away old calendars - they can be a fantastic source of ideas for your next projects. Get yourself a concertina file and accumulate magazine pictures and the like in categories of your favourites (teddies, flowers, landscapes, people etc.)

    THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Change and risk taking are normal aspects of the creative process. They are the lubricants that keep the wheels in motion. A creative act is not necessarily something that has never been done; it is something you haven't done before.
    Margaret Mead

ENLARGING AND REDUCING PATTERNS - Tip for Scanner or Photocopier

To reduce or enlarge a pattern, divide the size you want the pattern to be by the size of the pattern you have, and multiply by 100%.

Let's say you have a pattern that is 15" long and you want a pattern that is 12" long. 12 divided by 15 x 100% = 80%. You would scan or photocopy at 80%

Let's say you wanted to enlarge a pattern. You have a pattern that is 20" long and you want it to be 24" long. 24 divided by 20 x 100% = 120%. Therefore you would scan or photocopy your pattern at 120%.

    Colours That Pack a Punch
Use unequal amounts of complementary colors, alone and in combination, to create colorful tonal arrangements.

For example, mix orange and blue for a barn, then echo the blue in the sky and use an accent of pure orange for a tractor. The results will pulsate with vitality.

TIP - Making Even Sized Checks, or Making a Border on a Curved Line

Take a shader brush the size that you want your checks to be, wet it, and mark the surface with water. Then place a pencil mark along the edge of the water mark. Continue in this fashion, and voilą, you have even sized checks.

On a curved border, just wet the brush, pull it along the edge of the pattern or surface, and draw a pencil or chalk line the width of the water mark. An easy way to get an even border around the edge. Works especially well along a curved line. Or put one tablespoon of potpourri into a jar and fill the jar with boiling water to release the fragrance.

For filling, use electric mixer on medium speed, beet eggs, sugar and almond extract in large bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Sift in flour, baking powder and salt. Beat on low speed to blend. Stir in cranberries, walnuts, coconut and sultanas. Spread over shortbread base.

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Some minds are like concrete thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

    It's a Sad Day

Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, The California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the hostess Twinkies and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times he is still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 350 for about 20 minutes.

If this made you smile for even a brief second, please rise to the occasion and take time to pass it on and share that smile with someone else who may be having a crumby day and kneads it.

    A WOMAN'S RANDOM THOUGHTS

    1) Reason to smile: Every 7 minutes of every day, someone in an aerobics class pulls a hamstring.

    2) My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely.

    3) The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes.

    4) The nice part about living in a small town: When you don't know what you're doing, someone else always does.

    5) Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

    6) Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness.

    7) Amazing! You hang something in your closet for a while and it shrinks two sizes!

    8) They keep telling us to get in touch with our bodies. Mine isn't all that communicative but I heard from it the other day after I said, "Body, how'd you like to go to the six o'clock class in vigorous toning?" Clear as a bell my body said, "Listen fatty....do it and die."

    9) I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That's my idea of a perfect day.

    10) If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties? How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a noose around your neck?
