What’s a Gelbvieh?
Gelbvieh means “gold cow” in German and is pronounced “Gelp-Fee”
The Gelbvieh breed is one of Germany's oldest and originated in Bavaria from a breeding program started in 1850. This led to the development of a pure bred line of "red-yellow Franconian cattle" and the establishment of breed societies for Yellow Franconian and Gelbvieh in 1897 and 1899 respectively.
Gelbvieh genetics came to the US in 1970 and Canada in 1972. The breed is relatively new to Ontario but is very well accepted breed in western Canada and US. The breed is moderate framed, comes in the traditional gold colour as well as red and black and is known for good temperament and maternal traits.
