  6. 'Round the Table
    • Internet News: a newspaper about internet topics, published in Lakefield. Available in the Lakefield library.

    • Q: How to remove pop-up menu bars? (They are not found in the "add/remove program" list.)

A: Paul: Go to the web site that installed the programme, and find and run the uninstall programme. You need to be online when you run the uninstall.

    • Q: How to get a scanner to run with Windows XP?

A: Paul: You need to know the exact model of the scanner, and get the correct driver. For a brand name scanner (eg. HP, Canon, Epson), this should not be a problem. However, for many brands which are no longer being made drivers are not available.
The trend now is to multipurpose machines (scanner/printer/copier).

    • Q: (Alvin) had made a note last meeting about problems with Windows Media Player. What was the issue?

A: Paul: Media Player tracks your usage, so if that's an issue, don't use it. There are other, better players available.

Anne: One alternative is 1by1. This is a tiny (50k) program with a very simple interf: a file tree (like Windows Explorer). Clicking a file plays it.

    • Q:Cost / value of printer cartridges

A: Paul: Canon has the best value. Among genericcartridges, Epson generic cartridges seem to be OK. The "general purpose" is a better value than the high quality

    • Q:(Evelyn) now using XP, and "starting to like it.

A: Paul:XP is good for new applications, but does have problems running older software. You may not get DOS games to run on XP> David: XP doesn't allow you to move memory.

    • Q:(David) Why does a Celeron processor take so long to start up?

A: Paul: Celeron chips are slower, because they don't have on-board cache. He has heard that Pentiumm chips that don't pass inspection may be used as Celeron chips.

    • Q: (Don) Why does my computer slow down when loading photos?

A: Paul: Check your hard drive space. If there isn't sufficient space left for swap files, speed will be affected.

    • Q: (Bob) son has been downloading files using Limewire.

A: Paul: AltaVista (av.com) is a good download site (no spyware).

    • Digital cameras. Paul recommends Canon (good lens and body) and Fuji. Kodak are generally poorer quality.

    • Digital media readers: (Anne) uses a USB flash reader/writer to transfer data from the camera (card) to and from the computer. This saves camera batteries, and also allows you to move pictures to the card (see printing photos below). Readers available in single or multi-card format (eg. USB 7-in-1 reader), available in $20 - $30 range.

    • Printing digital pictures: Machine at Walmart (Peterborough & Uxbridge) accepts digital cards as well as CDs. 4x6, good-quality photos cost 25 cents each. Loblaws now also offers this service.
