- 'Round the Table
- Chris:
a reminder of the upcoming Fenelon Quilt Show.
iTunes: not yet available in Canada, but now in Europe (as well as the US)
Apple has introduced a wireless transmission device which plugs into an electrical outlet and picks up wireless signals to transmit to your stereo system. $129 US, available for Mac and PC.
- Bernie: has RealTek Sound Manager (XP) Does anyone know how to use it?
- Mike: is enjoying his new digital camera: Kodak, with Easyshare software. He finds it easy to use.
Digital camera discussion:
- Please "downsize" pictures when sending by email ("resize to email" is the Kodak tool)
- As with all cameras, the lens is most important. Having more "megapixels" will allow a larger picture, but the clarity will depend on the lens.
- Larry: There's a "pop-up menu" key on Windows keyboards, which acts the same as the right mouse button.
- Al: has a new printer which reads all digital media (ie. Smartmedia, Compact Flash, SD, Memory key).
He recommends PhotoSuite for photo editting.
- Mike: 3rd party diallers (fraud diallers).
These programs ("trojan horses"), will dial long-distance calls from your computer without your knowledge. They are loaded by a pop-up window which asks you to download a program to view pictures, etc. The program then disconnects your regular connection, and dials an offshore service (Sao Paulo, Russia,...)
This is like a 1-900 call, and charges up to $9.00 a minute. It shows up on your regular phone bill. Your phone company won't reverse it (they have to pay the service, so recover the money from you).
If you find it on your computer call your ISP and they will walk you through the process of removing it.
The programs to look for are MiniDialler, XXXDialer... there are othrs that don't show up in the Task list.
Note that this can also happen to cale users, if there is a modem attached to the computer.
Prevention:
- Have an international call block put on your line (unless you need to call overseas!)
- Nexicom has a feature requiring a PIN number to dial long-distance
- Disconnect the phone line from your computer when it's not in use.
This is a good idea during thunderstorm season anyway!)
- Set up your dialler with your own phone number as the "outside line"
