- Demonstration: File size
Before attaching a file to an email message, check its size. Don't send anything larger than 100k to people with dial-up connections without first asking permission. Kawartha-online doesn't accept messages larger than 50k.
Locate the file in Windows Explorer, right-click on the file icon, then choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
- Demonstration: Outlook Express: email filters
Menu item Tools / Message Rules can be used to:
- Move email from (these) addresses to (these) folders
- Leave large messages on the server: (If message greater than ___ (eg. 100k), leave on server)
- Block specific senders
You can also block a sender from the actual email (message) window: right-click on their email address and choose "add to blocked senders" from the pop-up menu.
- Demonstration: Webmail
Webmail is a program which handles email on your ISP's server - ie. before it is downloaded to your computer. You can use it to access your mail from any computer. It is also useful to delete large or unwanted mail (spam) directly on the server, to save time and avoid the risk of viruses.
Mike showed how to:
- delete messages
- download messages after viewing
This is tricky, because Webmail automatically moves viewed messages to the saved folder.
- change your preferences:
recommended changes:
- uncheck "move old messages to saved"
- uncheck "filter messages with faked smpt" (if filtered, you wouldn't get mail from Hotmail users)
- use autoreply
... beware... this replies to everything, including spam
- use history to see what has been deleted.
"trash" is automatically emptied after a specified period
- use filters
Filters specified in Webmail apply only to messages viewed via Webmail - ie. this won't work when you read your mail through Netscape or Outlook Express.
- Demonstration: Spam Buster
This is a service offered by Nexicom to screen your email for spam before you download it. When it was first tested, of 160,000 messages received by Nexicom's mail server, only 40,000 weren't spam!
Nexicom considers its role to be similar to a post office. The post office delivers all mail received, including junk mail. However, Nexicom offers this service to "quarantine" or delete suspected spam, using your instructions. When messages are "quarantined", you receive an email listing just the subject lines. You can then request those messages you want to receive, and the rest will be deleted.
Spam buster evaluates messages based on a point system (eg. multiple recipients, trigger words in subject or content, suspected sender address, etc.). The default threshold is to quarantine messages with more than 5 points, and delete those with with more than 30 points. You can change those thresholds in the "advanced settings" part of Nexicom's Spambuster page.
- 'Round the Table
- Chris:
- Adam: www.wwwdotcom.com...that's all, folks
- Anne:Yes Victoria there is a referendum
- Mike K.:
- Nexicom DSL (high-speed, broadband) is now available in both Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon
- Nexicom accounts include web space (ie. for your own web pages), 5MB for intermediate and occasional accounts. Before you can use it you must ask them to allocate the space.
- www.modemhelp.net is useful for diagnosing modem problems
- Q: How do you use blind carbon in Outlook Express?
A: (Paul) If you just type the addresses in the BCC line, be sure to separate each with a comma or semicolon. It's safer to choose email addresses from the Address Book and click on the BCC window.
- Q:Will Spambuster notify you of messages that were deleted?
A: (Mike): With the defaults, you won't be notified of any messages with more than 15 points. However, you can change that threshold to a higher value.
- Wally: One way to avoid spam is to use a different login for browsing than the one you use for email
- Q: How can I get a large email off the server. The connection keeps timing out.
A: (Mike):In Outlook Express choose Tools /Accounts /Pro perties. Change the timeout on the "slider"
- Roy:Spybot Search & Destroy
is a free program to find and remove spyware. It is similar to AdAware but also "immunizes" your browser to avoid downloading spyware. Use it in conjuction with Adaware
- Larry: Some of the people at the Seniors Centre encountered problems deleting messages before they had read them. Larry put a "Preview" icon on the tool bar to turn the preview panel on and off.
- Q: How can you have a window size properly when you open it?
A: (Paul): Hold down the shift key while resizing the window. When you next open it, it will revert to that size.
- Chris: www.apple.com/music download music (MP4 format) for 99 cents a track. So far it is available only in the US. You can listen to the first 30 seconds for free.
- Q: How can you print just one (physical) page from a web site?
A: (Adam): Highlight the part you want to print, then Right click and choose Print from the menu.
(Alternatives: Print preview to see which physical page you want, then specify that page on the Print dialog, or Copy and Paste the text into a word processor)
- Mike R: regarding the "buddy system", when his "buddy" encounters a problem, Mike writes it down and brings it to the next meeting.
- Q: Why is the last page of a print job being printed first?
A: probably the "collate" box in the Print Dialog is checked.
- Q: Why do I get a "session timeout" message in Webmail?
A: (Garth) You have bookmarked a page within a webmail session. Delete the bookmark, then go to the login page and bookmark that. (or, to avoid the intro pages, bookmark the page you get after you log out,
- Garth: The line speed shown by Sympatico appears to be misleading. It is possible that speed is being limited to 28.8
