Bobcaygeon Internet Users Group
Minutes of the Meeting of September14, 2000
Garth Scarborough called the meeting to order, and welcomed the newcomers.
Minutes of August 14 were reviewed on-line.
Financial statement as of August 23 was read.
Garth suggested that, now that Nexicom is providing us with a laptop, we
reconsider the goal for our "coffee fund", and invited suggestions for
community projects. His suggestion was to set up an on-line archive of local
historic photographs.
"'Round the Table"
Our monthly tour: Members discussed what they have been doing on the internet,
as Garth brought up some of these recommended sites on the overhead projector.
- Niesje & Joe Groenendyk: are keeping in touch with relatives in the Netherlands via email.
They mentioned the government Atlas program (Note: Sorry, I didn't get the URL. Does anyone have it? - AP)
- Bruce Fenway, an "alumni" of the computer classes at the
Seniors' Centre, complimented Mike Ricks on his teaching. He noted
that the only way to become really comfortable with a computer is to
"do it yourself". He and wife Evelyn recommended a few sites:
- Paul McCauley, owner of "Comp-Dynamix" in Fenelon Falls,
(which he likened to "owning your own toy store")suggested
www.howthingswork.com
- Larry Muter: www.eboard.com
- Jarvis Wedley: greeting cards at www.bluemountain.com
- Al Wright:
- the Mayo Clinic site (www.mayohealth.org) is a reliable source of medical information
- recommended Internet Call manager (see www.nexicom.net) to accept calls
while you are on-line
- for genealogy research, there is a lot of information at the Mormon
site, but bear in mind that it is updated by the public, not by the Mormons.
- Garth Scarborough:
- Anne Panter: Freelane, a free Internet Service Provider, at
www.excite.com
Note: Computer magazines ("Toronto Computes", "We Compute", "The Computer Paper")
were not available at the meeting, but will be delivered to the Fenelon Falls
and Bobcaygeon Libraries on the weekend.
Next Meeting:
Thursday October 12, 7:00 p.m.
Lions Hall (Old Fire hall)
Main Street - Bobcaygeon
All welcome
