The inaugural Eganridge Junior Golf Tournament took place on Monday, August 11, 1997. Cloudy, cool weather greeted 42 youngsters as they teed off to start the event.
The ages of those participating ranged from 9 years old to 18. They competed in two age categories: 14 and under, and 18 and under. Champions were declared in each division and they received a "keeper" trophy and a membership for next year. The winner of the 14 and under division was Derek Hall who shot a sparkling 43 for the nine hole event. The winner of the 18 and under event was Scott Kelly who finished with a 46 for the nine holes.
The competition was followed by chipping and putting contests won by Doug Milne and Michael Bromley respectively. Each won a small plaque and a golf club related to the event. A putter for Michael, and a sand wedge for Doug.
All competitors were the recipients of prizes donated most generously by merchants and individuals from Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls. It was their willing assistance that made the day a total success. Further, each contestant upon registering was given a "goodie" bag containing golf related merchandise.
The organizers were pleasantly surprised at the number who registered, and it is their hope that this highly successful day will develop into an annual event. The 1998 tournament is tentatively scheduled for August - details to follow.
