Our Communities on the Internet
Last week I had a phone call asking me to update the information on the web page for the Bobcaygeon Fall Fair. Not an unusual request: as I mention regularly in this column, on behalf of the Internet Users Group I’m currently looking after the non-profit pages for Bobcaygeon and Fenelon. What was surprising, and disappointing, was the comment that "I hadn’t realized there was a web page for the fair."
When the Bobcaygeon and Fenelon sites were first added, in 1996, few local people had access to the internet. My list in this space of the groups and events featured on those pages was meaningful only to those who were online. Perhaps now would be a good time to list them again.
Fenelon Falls home page •Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce •Kawartha Arts Festival •Fenelon Falls Project 2000 •Fenelon Falls Curling Club •Fenelon Falls: not-for-profit organizations •Fenelon Falls Public Library •Fenelon Falls Agricultural Fair •Kinmount Fair •Fenelon Falls Museum (Maryboro Lodge) •Laidlaw Heritage Village, Coboconk •Victoria County Rail Trail •Womens' Institutes •Fenelon Falls Brownies •Fenelon Falls Winter Games •St. John's Ambulance •Fundraiser for Benjamin •Fenelon Tennis Club
•Bobcaygeon, Canada •Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce •Bobcaygeon 2000 •Help Net •Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society •Bobcaygeon Hydro Commission •Victoria County Community Care •Kawartha Settlers' Village •Bobcaygeon Seniors' Centre •Bethel Pentacostal Church, Bobcaygeon •Bobcaygeon Olde Tymers (Old Time Fiddle Music) •Bobcaygeon Library •Boyd Heritage Museum•Opportunity Network •Sunshine Cancer Support Group •Bobcaygeon Legion •Bobcaygeon Fire Department •Bobcaygeon Curling Club •Bobcaygeon Boys & Girls Club •Bobcaygeon Fall Fair •Bobcaygeon Ice Dreams •Bobcaygeon Skating Club •Friends of the Osprey •Ontario Open Fiddle & Step Dance Contest •TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) •Bobcaygeon Walleye Tournament •KawarthaNet Users' Group •Clogging Grandmothers
This is just a list of separate pages, ie. those with their own internet addresses. Within those pages are listed many more groups than my 500 words here will allow. For example, under "community services" we have the contacts for Meals on Wheels and the Clothing Giveaway, and under "churches" are all local churches. And, of course, all local businesses with memberships in of the Chambers of Commerce have listings on the Chambers’ pages.
Also, most of the pages have been "published" to several search engines. For example, a search on "step dance" on Inference Find, will take you to the Ontario Fiddle & Step Dance Contest at the Bobcaygeon site.
If your group is here, the rest of the world can find you on the ‘net – so please take a few minutes to drop by yourself and verify the information that they are reading. Start your visit at at www.kawartha.net/~fencom (for Fenelon) or www.kawartha.net/~bobcom for Bobcaygeon.
And, if you are not listed, or are not yet using the ‘net – drop by at the Lions’ Club at 7pm this Thursday, for the Internet Users Group meeting. We’ll show you the sites!
